Hello all! What can I say about this skirt?! It is unique and I love that there is so much that you can do with it. Ok let me backtrack. This skirt was made using the Mimi G Baddie Leather skirt tutorial. It is one of her paid tutorials from years ago. She made the skirt with black faux leather in the front and black Ponte knit in the back. Of course, I had to purchase the tutorial because the skirt was fire! Fast forward, 5 years later, I finally completed the pattern and made the skirt. I completed the pattern years ago, but I ended up trashing it for reasons unknown.
I’m not sure if this tutorial is still available, I tried to find it on her website, but I didn’t see it listed anymore. In the tutorial Mimi G showed you step by step how to draft the pattern from your measurements and then how to sew it together. If you don’t follow Mimi G, then you should check her out because she has an awesome YouTube channel with DIYs galore and the Sew It Academy, where she takes you from beginner to advanced level sewing.
I used an animal print fabric that I found in the remnant section of Fine Fabrics for the front and a tan ponte knit for the back. I’m not sure what type of fabric the animal print is because it was not labeled but it does not have any stretch and a backing that feels like interfacing. The next time I make the skirt I will probably use the same solid color for the front and the back. I paired the skirt with Kwik Sew 4028 in a brown ponte knit from Fine Fabrics. I love a cowl neck collar, this one can be worn as a hood.
I was so nervous about making the skirt and I don’t know why because the tutorial was very helpful, and I didn’t have to figure anything out on my own. I almost psyched myself out of not photographing this skirt because I was very self-conscious. Thankfully my mom was here to encourage me to go for it! The best thing about this skirt is the back because of the unique design.
I had to do some alterations after I finished the skirt because it was too loose in the hip area. It is supposed to be snug around the hips, but I realize when I sewed that area, I went outward instead of just sewing in a straight line…Thanks mom! Other than that, the skirt came together beautifully, and I have a pattern so I can make it anytime. Let me know in the comments if you have this tutorial and if you have made it?
