Did you know that using the incorrect needle can affect the final look of your handbag? The name of the proper needle to use when sewing heavy-duty fabrics such as leather or suede are the Wedge point needle. The needle sizes (14/90 or 16/100) that you see on the package represents American and European sizes. The smaller number is the American size and the larger number is the European size. You will find needles that will specifically say leather or denim, I keep those on hand because I sew with mostly faux leather and denim. I’m also finding that also love using a Microtex needle when I’m making handbags.

I personally work with Gutermann Sew All 100% Polyester thread for most of my projects. Cotton thread is great; however, it tends to break under too much pressure when sewing handbags. The Gutermann polyester thread is available in a number of different sized spools 100m, 250m, 500m and 1000m as well as various colors. Although standard thread can be used for topstitching the thicker topstitching thread is perfect for use on heavier weight fabrics and provides a decorative look to stitching.
