Hello All!
I hope that your week is off to a great start. My weekend was great, I did a little project with some of the most beautiful and talented sewist in Atlanta. I’m very excited and I can’t wait to share it with you all. Now on to this outfit, I used a pink textured knit for the top and a cotton print for the skirt, both from Fine Fabrics.
I considered this outfit (well the shirt) a fail because it was too small, I cut a size 14 but I underestimated how much my breast have grown in the last year. I used Simplicity 8466 for this top, I tried to find the larger size pattern, but none of my stores are carrying it anymore. Even though the pattern is a crop top, it should fit loose. Because the shirt was too small, I decided to make another shirt and this one was slightly big. I used New Look 6609 for the second top, I cut a 16, but I think I can go down to a 14.
For the skirt I just sew 2 panels together, I wanted the paper bag waist look, so I folded over 2 ¼ and made a casing for ½ inch elastic. Initially, I wanted the skirt longer, but I cut the panels the wrong way. As you can see, I did not plan very well when I started this outfit.
A few lessons I learned while making this outfit. 1) I need to take a fitting class and learn how to cut garments according to my measurements 2) measure twice cut once! For the fitting classes, I am in the Sew It Academy and there are several different courses where we draft slopers from out measurements and we also learn how to make different garments from the slopers. For example, the courses include drafting slopers for a skirt and a bodice. From the skirt sloper we create a pencil skirt and an A line skirt, from the bodice sloper we create a peplum top and a dress. I drafted the skirt sloper a while ago, but I didn’t do anything with it, so I’m going to tackle it again this week. Once I have my slopers drafted, I can use them to ensure that I don’t make the same mistakes that I made with Simplicity 8466. Happy Sewing!
